A common failure on the VW Passat with the slot in keys is that the electronic steering lock fails thereby not allowing the car to start. The best solution to this problem is to fir an emulator which basically tells the car that everything is fine and the car then starts. Because the emulator does not have any moving parts, you won't have a steering lock issue again on that vehicle after fitting the emulator.
